Tell us a bit about yourself.
I come from a tiny village in Kildare called Broadford and am the youngest of 3 – I have one brother and one sister. I went to school in Clongowes where I boarded for the duration of my studies, coming home for 4-5 days per month. Luckily, I loved boarding school. I loved the discipline of it and honestly feel it taught me a lot. To this day I can’t stay in bed after 8am in the morning. Some might say I am institutionalised.
After school I went to DCU where I studied Business. Upon graduation from which I got an internship in a large finance company. It was good experience, but as with many large organisations, the roles were quite prescriptive and defined which just didn’t really suit me as I was keen to try and learn as much as I could in order to really narrow down the areas I liked and could excel in.
How did you come to work in Capitalflow?
I saw an ad on GradIreland recruitment website and started doing some research on the company. Probably the biggest appeal was that it was a new company. I had always heard new, upcoming companies where the places you could really grow, because of the broad exposure to all aspects of the business. I applied, was called to interview and thankfully got the job.
Tell us about your role in Capitalflow?
I started off as Business Support Executive in the Asset Finance Team, where I hit the ground running. My role was largely to support the team of Sales Directors in completing their deals and ensuring that all the necessary document was in place. To be honest I was pretty clueless about many of the Assets – diggers, trucks, trailers. The depth of knowledge of the Sales Directors around the various assets never ceased to amaze me, and luckily the team were always on hand to answer queries and help get me up to speed. I never supposed I would learn so much about asset finance vehicles!
What is your current role in the company?
I have just taken up the position of Lending Executive in the Property Team, based in our new offices in Baggot Street. I had always been interested in Property Finance and having been exposed to that side of the business I expressed an interest learning more in the area.
I really liked the idea of being involved in the bigger, more complex deals from outset to drawdown. Property Deals involve a lot of paperwork and third party collaboration, such as legals, and this diversity appealed to me.
How did the role change come about?
I expressed an interest to my manager and after some internal discussion, a space was made for me to move into the team, which I am really grateful for. Because the team is new, there are a lot of ambitious growth plans, meaning there are a lot of opportunities available. I am a pretty laid back guy, but I am also ambitious and want to do well. In a growing company like Capitalflow there is a lot of room for manoeuvre. Quite simply, the company is young, there’s a nice atmosphere and we enjoy it. Coming from a larger financial organisation, it’s refreshing to work for a company where you feel you have a voice, even if you are a newer or more junior member of staff.
